Description	Before the Humpty Dumpty Circus, a lion couldn’t roar then jump down from a chair in front of the lion tamer. To make animals “come alive” Albert Schoenhut first used new rubber elastic corded joints. His circuses allowed children in the early 1900s to create elaborate programs using animals including horses, tigers, elephants and giraffes as well as clowns, acrobats and horseback riders under the “big top” tent. Schoenhut immigrated to the United States from Germany just after the Civil War. He settled in Philadelphia, using his knowledge of toy making to create sturdy toy pianos. In 1872 he started his own company creating this circus and other dolls and toys hand carved out of wood.
