Title
Goofy
figure
Subject
Goofy (Fictitious character)
Cartoon characters
Disney, Walt, 1901-1966
Withers, Jane, 1926-
Description
This
Goofy
is
a
prototype
character
doll
designed
by
Walt
Disney
in
1935
.
Originally
known
as
Mickey's
sidekick
, "
Dippy
the
Dawg
"
Goofy
was
created
in
1932
by
Disney
animator
Art
Babbitt
.
Dippy
made
his
first
appearance
as a
fully
developed
character
in the
film
"
Mickey's
Service
Station
"
(1935)
. As of
1995
,
Dippy/Goofy
had
appeared
in
87
movies
,
growing
from a
bumbling
barnyard
character
into a
gung-ho
suburban
anti-hero
who
approached
life
with
great
enthusiasm
and
greater
incompetence
. The
circa
1935
toy
,
today
known
as "
Goofy
" was
one
of
hundreds
of
dolls
from
child
movie
star
Jane
Withers'
massive
collection
.
Withers
, a
contemporary
of and
co-star
with
Shirley
Temple
,
starred
in
36
films
between
1934
and
'43
, and her
collection
was a
reflection
of those
times
.
Dollmaker
Madame
Alexander
honored
Jane
Withers'
popularity
by
creating
a
celebrity
doll
in her
likeness
in
1937
.
According
to
Withers
, the
stuffed
Goofy
is
a
prototype
given
to her by
Walt
Disney
on a
day
he
picnicked
with her
near
some
California
orange
groves
and
envisioned
with her his
plans
for an
amusement
park
there. She
says
, "
I
admired
Walt
Disney
so
much
and
we
were
grand
friends....At
the
end
of the
day
he
gave
me
this
wonderful
Goofy
and
said
it
was the
first
model
of a
line
of
comic
character
dolls
he had
designed
.
I've
always
cherished
it.
" The
gifting
was also
captured
in a
black
and
white
photograph
that
came
with the
doll
.
