Description	In the past, shamans healed the sick, helped bring success in hunting, fishing or war and worked for spiritual balance in the community. By traveling to the spirit world, shamans could call upon spirit-helpers to aid them in recovering lost or afflicted souls. Shamanism was driven into decline by missionaries in the early 1900s, yet some shamanic practices remain alive today. Shamans would wear bone necklace, like this one, worn by a Tlingit or Haida shaman, around their necks in certain ceremonies. The designs represent the guardian or magic spirit.
