Lanterns
are
displayed
during
many
different
Chinese
festivals
. They
come
in
many
shapes
,
sizes
, and
materials
and
often
depict
characters
of
Chinese
mythology
or
popular
cartoons
.
Many
are
red
, the
color
for
happiness
and
good
luck
. The
Lantern
Festival
is
celebrated
on the
15th
of the
first
month
of the
New
Year
,
marking
the
end
of the
two
week
long
New
Year
celebration
. On the
night
of the
festival
,
elaborate
and
beautiful
lantern
displays
are
assembled
in
cities
and
villages
for
all
to
admire
.
Usually
, a
prize
is
awarded
to the
creator
of the
most
beautiful
lantern
or
lantern
display
.
Festivities
also
include
dragon
and
lion
dances
,
playing
games
,
setting
off
firecrackers
and
eating
traditional
foods
such
as
Yuanxiao
(sticky
,
sweet
rice
balls)
.
Children
participate
in the
festival
by
carrying
their
own
lanterns
.
During
the
two
week
Chinese
New
Year
celebration
,
colorful
and
decorative
lanterns
are
displayed
in
homes
,
businesses
and at
parties
. These
lanterns
were
made
about
1980
.
