Broad Ripple High Schoolwas originally established in 1886 with a two-year high school course of study for students in the little village north of Indianapolis. The school soon expanded to become a four-year institution and was annexed in May of 1923 to the city of Indianapolis, becoming the city's fourth public high school.
The first Broad Ripple High School yearbook was published in the spring of 1926. Published annually since then, the book is titled "Riparian" which means "bank of the river", the name chosen by a student contest.
Some well-known alumni include Michael Graves, architect; Stephen Goldsmith, former Indianapolis Mayor and Deputy Mayor of New York City;David Letterman, entertainer, comedian, philanthropist, and Indy Car team owner; Mike Woodson, National Basketball Association star and coach, and Abraham Benrubi, actor.
