George Washington High School opened in 1927 in Indianapolis in the Haughville neighborhood. A thriving and solidly working-class community at that time, the near west side of the city was hit hard by the Great Depression and suffered through the following years from the loss of employers and neighborhood institutions. Finally, due to shrinking enrollments, the high school was closed by Indianapolis Public Schools in 1995.
Some well-known graduates of Washington High School are Indiana Pacers Billy Keller and George McGinnis, Indianapolis mayor Philip Bayt, Jr., actor Strother Martin and Steve Downing, former member of the Boston Celtics.
The high school's yearbook, originally published as a special edition of the school newspaper, was called the Senior Post through the 1950s, finally becoming simply the Post. This collection of the annuals is not complete but spans the years 1932 through 1988.
The Indianapolis Public Library and its digitization partner, IUPUI University Library, are happy to present this digital collection of George Washington High School materials from the Indianapolis Special Collections Room of the Indianapolis Public Library and the Indiana Historical Society Library, published here with the generous support of The Library Fund, a fund of The Indianapolis Foundation.
